Dewey,
thanks for holding in there in regard to your convictions, and your struggles.
Just before I went to seminary, in summer of 1984 (remember the book that said that year was going to be full of ruin for us all…?), someone gave me a pastor’s article that said basically, “A pastor is not someone who prays out loud better than anyone else, nor someone who is good at stewardship, nor even necessarily someone who is a brilliant orator. The pastor is the one whom God chooses and anoints to stand up in front of everyone and let his or her struggle show.”
Meanwhile, about the lack of clergy speaking out about abortion… yes, it is fear and also “collusion.” It is hard to speak out against a system on which one’s income depends. There is an equal lack of courage in regard to wars –Vietnam went on for nearly a decade, resolving nothing, and Afghanistan/Iraq is the same thing only MUCH more expensive. Imagine all the adoption centers and the alternatives-to-abortion we could develop with even one percent of what is going to waste over there! Imagine the schools, hospitals, roads, recreation centers, swimming pools in poor parts of town… all the “green industry” jobs that could be developed…
Yet where is the pastoral demand for a more humane and sane use of our collective money…?
Where is the pastoral demand that we stop bailing out huge companies who’ve gambled and lost with other people’s money, and now demand –and got– that the taxpayers may good on their own bad gambling debts? Is it that economics is too complicated for the pulpit… or is it that too many stockholders are sitting in the pews…?
No, I agree with you: we as pastors are called to hold up the higher reality, that God is in charge, and that to God alone we must give our allegiance. that is the only way to “peace” of any enduring kind.

Hi everyone,
Wow! We are so excited! Hannah has made it to the semi-finals of the Spelling Bee and it will be broadcast live on ESPN tomorrow morning. This is ESPN on television – not on the internet like round 3 this afternoon. God’s grace was so evident as we found out her score on the written test. You needed at least a “27” out of 31 points to advance to the semi-finals and Hannah had a score of “29”. The Lord definitely has helped her every step of the way and we are so grateful to Him for this blessing! Thanks to all of you who have been praying for her and please don’t stop now! : ) Tomorrow’s rounds will be extra difficult as the officials need to get the numbers down from 48 spellers to about 12 for the finals on ABC in the evening.
Hannah did get to film a bio segment with the ESPN crew yesterday and I hope it will air during the first round on ESPN since we have no idea if she will make it past that!! We also just found out that the 12 finalists will get to tape a TV show tomorrow afternoon – I can’t say anything more about it right now, but I know Hannah would be thrilled to get to do that.

SPECIAL EDITION – FOCUS ON GAZA FLOTILLA INCIDENT: Events and alliances continue to heat up tensions in the Middle East: Terrorist groups on Israel’s northern and southern borders are increasingly equipped with arms and munitions that can reach to the very heart of the Jewish nation. These supplies are being shipped from Syria and in many cases provided by both Syria and Iran. US political loyalties toward Israel continue to weaken under the Obama administration, while Turkey, Israel’s single Islamic ally in the region, shifts rapidly towards friendly ties with radical Islamist entities – and increasingly bitter rejection of the Jewish state. Israel’s present government under Benyamin Netanyahu has taken a strong stand against terrorists and those who support them. It has refused to divvy up the Land and its capitol, Jerusalem, for a false peace with its enemies and has carried out military measures against Hamas terrorists who for decades have launched thousands of rockets at its civilian communities in the Negev. Increasingly, Israel comes under criticism for its methods of defense against terrorist organizations and governments, which would be deemed entirely commendable under similar circumstances if carried out in the United States or other Western countries. As the Middle East reaches the boiling point and the lineup of end-time nations in Biblical prophecy, takes shape, it will likely be something like the Gaza Flotilla incident that will be “the shot heard round the world,” preceding an all-out, prolonged explosion. G-d indeed, is in control, but is the time as never before to watch and pray, to be carefully informed and to intercede day and night for the peace of Jerusalem and for the strength and wisdom of the nation’s leaders.

Lord, we pray for Israel, Lord we pray for the leaders of the United States of America to stand with Your Israel! Lord, we pray for the Jubilee Festival that many will come to you today……..In the name of Jesus, Amen!
