(Albuquerque) — High winds ravaged New Mexico on Sunday, driving
wildfires, raising dust, reducing visibility, knocking out power to
about 4,000 homes in Edgewood and causing general havoc throughout the
state.
The National Weather Service said “As expected, it has been
a dynamic yet dreadful day across the Land of Enchantment,”
A strong storm system from the Pacific Northwest barrelled into the
state Sunday, bringing winds up to 50 and 60 miles an hour in
Albuquerque and other parts of the state.
The highest wind speed was recorded in Socorro, where a
70-mile-an-hour reading was reported.
The potentially damaging winds tapered off last night, with
cooler temperatures and considerably tamer winds expected today.

( Ruidoso) — A rapidly growing fire Sunday in the Ruidoso area of
southern New Mexico prompted authorities to ask some people to leave
their homes voluntarily and others were evacuated. Winds in the area
were blowing up to 44 mph. The fire was estimated at 1,000 to 2,000
acres.
Four homes and several barns were damaged Sunday in the
wind-driven grass fire.
The fire began Sunday afternoon on state and private land in
Ruidoso’s Gavilan Canyon.
Law enforcement officers asked residents along the north side
of U.S. 70 to evacuate as a precaution.
The fire burned in the direction of Ruidoso Downs Racetrack,
but no one had been asked to evacuate that area.
