Dear Dewey, I was touched by Darlene’s ‘Jesus’s Death is 60 second? I forget the headline of it. BUT I have a question, it says that the nails were not in His hand but in His wrist? could you or someone give me scripture where i may find that? I have been looking for awhile and can’t find it.
Thank you in advance my dear friend. ………..sam
Pastor Leonard is here to answer this……..
Hi Sam,
Dewey asked me to respond to your question about the nails in the hands of Jesus or in the wrists. Well, we really don’t know for sure but I have attached a couple explanations that might help.
If only nails were used without ropes then the hand probably cannot support the weight of his body. The nail would have had to be placed just below the wrist towards the elbow for that cross bone to support his weight. but if ropes were used which was common in Jesus’ day then the nail in the hands would make sense.
Hope the attachment helps.
Blessings.
NAILS:
One answer is that we don’t know for sure. There were millions of people crucified by the Romans. Crassus lined the “Appian Way” with crucifixions formiles during one slave revolt. The idea that only one method was used in millions of different crucifixions obviously isn’t likely. From archeology, we know the most common method by far was through the wrists in the space between the radius and ulna bones, thus breaking no bones. But that doesn’t mean other methods like nailing in the palms in between the philanges (bones in the hand) weren’t also used. Some have doubted the nailing through the hands thinking that such a place would not be strong enough, but the executioners most likely used rope to secure the wrists of those nailed in this manner so they could not pull their hands through the nail head.
According to some, the most likely situation is that Jesus was nailed through the wrists, not through the palms of the hands. The Bible, however, says Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross, and that He had nail wounds in His hands. To the believer, the Scripture is the highest source of information and truth.
Contrary to popular belief, when hands are mentioned in the Bible, it actually refers to “hands,” not hands and wrists or just wrists. Here are just a few examples in the Old Testament of the use of Hebrew words:
khaw-bak’ A primitive root; to clasp (the hands or in embrace):-embrace, fold.
khib-book’ a clasping of the hands (in idleness):-fold.
kho’-fen From an unused root of uncertain signification; a fist (only in the dual):-fists, (both) hands, hand [-full].
yaw-daw’ literally to use (that is, hold out) the hand; physically to throw (a stone, an arrow) at or away; especially to revere or worship (with extended hands); intensively to bemoan (by wringing the hands):-cast (out), (make) confess (-ion), praise, shoot, (give) thank (-ful, -s, -sgiving). maw-khaw’ A primitive root; to rub or strike the hands together (in exultation):-clap.
Here are examples in the Greek, the language of the New Testament writers:
ap-on-ip’-to ; to wash off (reflexively one’s own hands symbolically):-wash.
dee-akh-i-rid’-zom-ahe to handle thoroughly, that is, lay violent hands upon:-kill, slay.
ep-ith’-es-is ; an imposition (of hands officially):-laying (putting) on.
khi-rop-oy’-ay-tos manufactured, that is, of human construction:-made by (make with)- hands.
pee-ad’-zo to squeeze, that is, seize (gently by the hand [press], or officially [arrest], or in hunting [capture]):-apprehend, catch, lay hand on, take.
poog-may From a primary word, πύζ pux, (the fist as a weapon); the clenched hand, that is, (only in the dative case as adverb) with the fist (hard scrubbing):-oft.
hrap-id’-zo From a derivative of ῥέπω rhepō, a primary word, (to let fall, “rap”); to slap (with the palm of the hand):-smite (with the palm of the hand).
pso’-kh to triturate, that is, (by analogy) to rub out (kernels from husks with the fingers or hand):-rub. (Note all definitions are from Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries.) These are just some examples of how Hebrew and Greek words were very distinctive in describing things done by the hand. The idea that the wrist was not distinguished from the hand in those times was simply untrue.
The strongest evidence that Christ was nailed through his hands is found in the words of Jesus. Luke 24:39 (KJV) “39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. John 20:24 – 29 (KJV) 24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. 29Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” The Greek word used by John the Apostle was: Khire the hand (literally or figuratively [power]; especially [by Hebraism] a means or instrument):-hand.
Another view: We know that crucifixion was invented by the Persians about 300 or 400 years B.C. It was among the most painful and excruciating form of punishment leading to death ever contrived by man for man (women were never crucified). If we trace the word “excruciation” back to its origins we find that it is inextricably linked to the act of crucifixion: Latin excruciatus, past participle of excruciare, from ex- + cruciare to crucify, from cruc-, crux cross(Merriam Webster Dictionary).
Contrary to popular notion the nails which held Jesus to the cross must have been driven into His wrists and not his palms. Jesus’ nails would have been made of heavy, probably square, iron material, 7-9 inches long. Many great painters from the past have depicted Jesus being nailed through His palms to the cross; it is a medical impossibility for this to be the case. You may have to really work your mind to grasp the enormity of what was going on here. The weight of a fully grown man was going to be suspended by three nails.
Not all crucifixions were carried out in the same way; some victims were tied to the cross while others were nailed. Jesus was nailed. He was made to carry the cross-bar to the place of His execution. The upright post (stipe) was a permanent fixture. The crossbar (patibulum) was always carried to the location, not the complete cross as is often depicted. When Jesus got to the place of His execution, He was placed on His back with His arms outstretched. The nails were first driven through small wooden disks to eliminate any chance of the heads pulling through the flesh. The site of the incision in the arm was critical; the Romans had perfected the procedure, a very specific procedure. The legionnaire who had been given the task felt for a specific spot, the nail had to be driven in-between the bones of the forearm up close to the wrist while not severing any major arteries or veins. There is a space between eight small bones which is structurally suitable to permit a full body weight to be supported for a time. If the nails had been driven into the palms of the hands, under the extreme weight, they would have ripped out between the fingers.
First, a nail would have been driven into His arm on one side, and then the other. The legionnaire would make sure that His arms were not pulled too tightly, allowing flexion and movement. With this done, the patibulum was then raised and affixed to the stripe. The next stage involved the nailing of the feet; this was also a deliberate action. The third nail had to be driven through both feet, which were turned outward so the nail could be hammered inside the Achilles tendon. With His knees slightly flexed Jesus was now crucified. As He slowly sagged down, He would have tried to support His weight with the muscles of His legs, an impossible position to maintain. In some cases, the victims’ legs were broken, so that they couldn’t support themselves in this way. Eventually more and more weight was placed upon the nails. The method the Romans had perfected ensured that crucifixion victims would hang painfully until their diaphragm went into spasm and they literally suffocated to death.

From the Teachings of Charles Spurgeon……
When we know that we have eternal life, we do not fret about trials of this passing life. I could point
to the brethren here this morning and I could mention sisters at home who amaze me by their endurance of pain and weakness. This I know concerning them, that they never have a doubt about their interest in Christ. And for the this cause they are able to surrender themselves into those dear hands that were pierced for them. They know that they are the Lord’s, and so they say, “Let Him do what seems good to Him” 1 Sam 3:18
Last night I talked to a friend who only had bread to eat yesterday. He was eating it before he went to bed to fill up his stomach. He has no money until pay day for food. many in America are in the same boat. By contrast I read a story yesterday that the Texas rangers Baseball Team is going to be selling a ONE POUND HOT DOG for $28.00 at the ball park this season! Greed? Overeating? Money! Money! What a disconnect with the common folk of this country! Much greed at the ballpark! Much greed in our society, and by selling this hot dog they are contributing to the poor health of people!
My friend, was not concerned at all about his well being…..he said he would be okay until friday, which is pay day. With Gretchen and Lars both in school my heart goes out to them because they struggle to have enough money to put food on their table, both work, but it is a challenge. Many others are in the same boat. Let us pray.
There is a huge disconnect in the Unites States of America between the rich and poor.
Spurgeon goes on in his teaching………
Let us never tamper with the truth of God. I find it as much as I can do to enjoy the discomfort of the truth and to learn the spiritual lessons of God’s Word without setting up to be a critic upon it.And I find it immeasurably more profitable to my own soul to believingly adore than unbelieving to invent objections, or industriously to try to meet them. The meeting of objections is an endless work. When you have killed one regiment of them, there is another regiment coming on, and when you have put to the sword whole legions of doubts, doubters still swarm upon you like the frogs of Egypt! It is poor business. It has no practical end. It is far better to firmly believe what you profess to believe and to follow out to all the blessed consequences all the truths of God that, in your own heart and soul, you have received of the Lord.
Please now read John 5: 24-29……..get out your Bible and please read……..AMEN!
At our Birthday Worship and Praise Service at Legacy Church on April 13th we now have over 150 prizes we are giving away!!! PRAISE GOD!! Included in this is many books from Dr. Charles Stanley heard weekday mornings on KKIM at 8:05.
Dr. Stanley says this about our walk with Jesus………
Make prayer and meditation on God’s Word daily priorities…….
Psalm 1: 1-3
Meditation simply means reading a daily passage of the Bible and talking to the Lord about it, asking
Him questions and seeking understanding, direction, or encouragement. Since the Lord knows what you’re going to face each day, it’s best to do this in the morning so you’ll be strengthened for whatever lies ahead. In fact, this was the pattern that Jesus followed, rising early in the morning to be alone with His Father (Mark 1:35, Folks this is why I have a CUP early in the morning with you, first I get up and pray and read……then the Lord shows me what to type to you this day) If you diligently fill your mind with the Word each day, the Lord will quip you for whatever He’s called you to do (Josh 1: 7-8), and you will be able to better discern His will for your life! AMEN! PRAISE GOD!!!
Day 36 of our 40 day Journey………
Psalm 22: q14-15 Old Testament Prophecy
My life is poured out like water,
and all my bones have slipped out of joint.
My heart melts like wax inside me.
My strength is gone, dried up like shards of pottery;
my dry tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
You lay me in the dust of death.
Mark 15: 44-45 Fulfilled in Jesus
Pilate could not believe Jesus was already dead, so he sent for the Centurion, who confirmed it.
Let us be in prayer………..
Let’s now hear from Karen Rowe, Thursdays at 2:45pm on KKIM………
“It is not what I do, but what God has done ~ That our name is written in the Book of Life in Heaven –This is the agenda for Rejoicing!” (Luke 10:20)
so it is also, not what we do or do not do …
For God is the JUDGE …
The Holy Spirit CONVICTS …
Our JOB is to LOVE and PRAY for each other…
IT IS THE JOB OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO DOES THE WORK … so we don’t fail…we just love and pray …
The Holy Spirit Convicts and God’s Word will not come back void….YET IN GOD’s TIME and in God’s WAY….
God has got a lot of teaching all along the way…so we are taught to BE PATIENT with EACH OTHER and PERSEVERE THROUGH ALL THINGS>…..
Lean not on your own understanding, but in all ways acknowledge HIM and HE will direct your path…
In all things…We must discern good from evil (James 3:13-18)
In all things …we are not to take the opinion of man or woman ALONE, but to open the Bible and find out what God has to say about that … humm u know what I am referring to? …. WITH A WiLLING heart to walk forward or away … whatever we learn God’s will to be …
Cuz sometimes opinions make sense and fear will and is intended to stop us from doing the will of God ….. so communication is VITAL between all children of God…and in all relationships…
do not deny the truth, but test every thing and all things for the TRUTH of God…
I hope this was a blessing to you…cuz this is my area of learning right now and this has first blessed me.
Much love to you Dewey!
Blessings Dewey,
Karen

March 27, 2012. Mornings are a good time for you and Me to meet face to face. Other times of the day are fine as well. Our times together not only bless and quicken you but they benefit Me by the pleasures they bring. It means so much to Me that you have learned to visit Me face to face. Many of My children think they cannot seek My face. Others have unhealed relationships with their earthly fathers and, at times, project their hurts from him onto Me. I am a loving and healing Father beyond what you have experienced. Come to Me now. My arms are open. I love you so much.

March 27, 2012. You are out of touch with something important going on. You don’t know what to do about it. Right now it is bothering you. Get control of yourself. Be at peace. I have everything under control. Have faith in Me. You are tending to have faith in faith. That is misplaced faith. I always know what is best. I will always do the right thing for you and the other people involved. Their anxiety is picking up on your anxiety and now it is going round and round. You are close to chaos. Exhibit self – control. This is the fruit of My Spirit. Trust Me and be at complete rest.
Galatians 5:22-24 (NASB) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Bev Robinson

March 27, 2012. What is the mark you wish to leave when you leave this life? What is your greatest pursuit? Is it fame, fortune or some other quest to establish your identity? Only you and I know the real answer. Your obituary or epitaph on your tombstone might really depict what sort of legacy you truly have left behind. Establish right now what really is most important in the scope of life. I walked an undeniable path of righteousness in My time upon the Earth. What path are you pursuing? Is the impact you are making temporal or eternal? Chose today whether you will serve Me or mammon. Establish righteousness in your walk.

Let’s get our Medical bag from Dr. Joe!!!
Over the weekend, former Vice President Dick Cheney underwent an apparently successful cardiac transplantation. He’d been waiting about 20 months for a heart to become available. He last made the news when he received a left ventricular assistive device (LVAD) to help his weakened heart pump blood. This was being used as a temporary device, much like dialysis that’s used to keep someone alive, until they can receive a kidney transplant.
Cheney suffered multiple heart attacks since his first at age 37 (very young for a heart attack). His most recent, in 2010, was his fifth myocardial infarction. He had cardiac bypass surgery in 1988, with two follow-up angioplasties to clear recurrent narrowing of the arteries. In 2001, he had a special pacemaker implanted in his chest, and then the special LVAD.
Vice President Cheney is alive today because of the constant progress of medical science. He’s been fighting most of his life against a truly horrendous genetic problem regarding his heart. Yes, he’s an extreme case, but regardless the truth is, it’s much better to prevent heart disease than to fix it.
Although organ transplantation is among the most technologically advanced surgeries performed, Mr. Cheney is taking immune suppression drugs (for the rest of his life) to prevent his body from rejecting the transplanted organ, which is, of course, foreign protein to his body.
The most common heart disease is coronary artery disease, or CAD. This is caused by progressive blockages growing within the walls of the heart’s arteries mostly caused by inflammation. When the blockages begin to cut off the supply of blood to the heart muscle, the patient may develop chest pain (angina), or a heart attack (myocardial infarction), if the blood flow is suddenly and completely cut off.
Death is the most common first sign of this disease and it remains the number one cause of death in the USA and most developed Western countries. It is treated by medical or surgical means.
Surgically it’s unblocking the arteries with a catheter (a thin tube, passed through the groin or arm into the affected coronary artery). This called an angioplasty. To keep the artery open, the cardiologist may insert a stent, a metal (titanium) mesh device, often coated with special drugs that inhibit coagulation of blood, to keep the artery wedged open.
At other times, the chest may be opened in a “real” open surgery, called a thoracotomy, where they crack the patient open like a lobster with the heart exposed. The blocked arteries are bypassed with a segment of vein, harvested from the patient’s leg, or an artery from the underside of the chest wall. This procedure requires great precision, skill, and speed on the part of the surgeon.
The bottom line to all this is that there IS something you can do to prevent the most common of the heart problems, which is coronary artery disease. With a few simple changes in diet, activities, supplements and breathing, you can make a profound difference in your personal risk profile, even if your genetics are not the strongest when it comes to your heart.
You make the commitment to live a much healthier life style and you can lower your blood cholesterol and triglycerides, you can reduce (or possibly, even reverse) plaque formation inside the walls of your coronary arteries, you can thin your blood so it’s less likely to clot off a narrowed vessel and precipitate a heart attack, you can reduce inflammation which triggers a heart attack, and you can increase oxygen utilization in your lungs which will increase your cardiovascular reserve capacity.
Of course, I can’t guarantee that you’ll never have heart problems. But I will tell you that if you take care of your health you will dramatically reduce your cardiac risk factors, improve your odds of avoiding a serious heart problem, and increase your chances of survival if you do.
But nothing good happens if you DO nothing. If you want to be around for your children and THEIR children, and all your loved ones…then take some positive action…today.
Thanks so much Dr. Joe!!!!!!!!!
